In this fourth episode of the series we learn about Alan Ginsberg and the Beat generation. His mother was a communist and he used to fantasize about sleeping with his father. Perhaps he actually did, since he went on to become an advocate for NAMBLA, the North American Man Boy Love Association. His book ‘Howl’ set new standards in filth but thanks to a strict reading of the Roth decision from the previous podcast, the judge passed it. The media coverage of the case catapulted it into the public consciousness and Jewish publisher Barney Rosset then decided he would challenge the obscenity laws directly.
Rosset was a far-left Jew who would use ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ as a way to sneak through far more perverted literature in the form of ‘Tropic of Cancer’. The people involved in these endeavours were Jews and they were quite open about why it was they were pushing to get these obscene publications forced onto America’s bookshelves. Lenny Bruce also had a hand in this and we hear about some of the twisted things that he got up to, such as performing naked and urinating into a hole on the stage. He would eventually die of a drugs overdose, but still he remains the blueprint for many filthy comedians ever since.
