The Daily Nationalist: The Fatherland and The Lusitania – DN 022619

Carolyn Yeager joins Sven Longshanks to discuss her research into the first world war, the sinking of the Lusitania and how it ties in with the Jussie Smollett case.

The Fatherland was a magazine published in America by German- Americans, written in English. It told the other side of the war from the German perspective and criticised both American and British disregard for the international rule of law.

Before the sinking of the Lusitania, British merchant ships that were supposed to be neutral had been ramming u-boats and their skippers had been rewarded for it.

At the time of the sinking of the Lusitania, there were articles before and after in major newspapers pointing out the dangers of sending passenger ships to sea laden with illegal ammunition destined for killing Germans.

On top of using the passengers as a human shield, the lifeboats and other life saving equipment on the ship were all in bad order leading to many deaths after the ammunition went up when the U Boat’s one and only torpedo hit.

It was this backdrop that led to a German U-boat firing upon the Lusitania, which was heavily laden with illegal armaments and hoping to use it’s human cargo to deflect from being attacked.
