Messerschmitt, Sven Longshanks and Dennis Wise present another episode of Axis War Heroes revisited, this time looking at U-boat captain Günther Prien and the Weimar republic.
Schmitt begins by telling us about his early life living in relative poverty by today’s standards and how he always wanted to be a sailor.
After saving enough money for basic training, he goes on his first voyage and is surprised at the high level of discipline required, so much so that the other students were unable to put up with it.
We hear how he was unable to get work due to living in the Weimar period and he eventually volunteers for a work detail, where he just gets paid in food and lodgings.
After joining the Kriegsmarine we hear about his first patrols, how many ships he sank and what life was like living on the u-boat.
Finally we learn about his courageous expedition right into the heart of enemy territory, the British naval base of Scapa Flow, which made him a national hero in Germany.
It is not known exactly how he died, just that he never returned from a patrol and Schmitt gives us the details of some of the most likely ships who may have sunk him.
Prien was so popular among the German nation that a film was made about his life after the war, but in order to make that acceptable to Germany’s new owners he had to be cast as being anti-National Socialist.
His record of vessels destroyed was huge and Schmitt tells us about some of the medals he received, including one which had never been given to a u-boat captain before.
