Sven Longshanks and Dennis Wise discuss Winston Churchill’s cowardly and unnecessary attack in Algiers, on his allies the French Navy.
A man who cannot be trusted, will seldom trust anyone else and Churchill was no exception to this.
The admiral of the French fleet had given his word to Churchill that if Hitler ever tried to take over the French fleet, his men would scuttle their ships.
Expecting his word to be enough, Admiral Darlan was then shocked to find Churchill offering him ultimatums and threats, before blasting the French navy while they were sitting ducks in the dock at Algiers.
Later in the war when Hitler did try to take the rest of the French navy, the sailors dutifully scuttled their ships proving their word would have been honoured.
Thanks to Churchill over a thousand French sailors needlessly lost their lives, more losses than any that Germany had suffered at that time.
