Sven Longshanks and Max Musson talk about Aethelflaed, the Lady of Mercia and how she succeeded in fulfilling Alfred’s dream of uniting the Saxon kingdoms.
We are taught today that our women are now liberated and that our ancestors were oppressors who would not let them out of the kitchen.
But the Lady of Mercia defeated the Danes and was the head of state over a thousand years ago, while the plight of our daughters today is covered up by the court scribes and paid story-tellers.
In the presentation we learn the reason why the Mercians would not have referred to her as queen, despite her being their defacto monarch.
We also hear again about Vikings breaking their oaths, but Aethelflaed retaliated and broke their force, leading to her taking control of the Danelaw and passing it on to her brother just before she died.
