Greatest Britons: HRH Edward Longshanks – GB 0714201

Sven Longshanks and Max Musson discuss one of Britain’s greatest monarchs whose vision of a united kingdom still lasts to this day.

Edward I has had a very unfair treatment by Hollywood and modern historians, probably because he expelled the Jews from England.

But if we look at primary source documents composed at the time of his reign, they tell a very different story to the one we heard in ‘Braveheart’.

This presentation on Edward I covers his reasons for getting involved in Scotland and the legend of the stone of destiny, which he removed from Scone after the princes there broke their oaths to him.

Edward’s legendary vengeance against the Scots was due to Robert the Bruce murdering an innocent man at the altar, for refusing to break his oath to the king.

Wikipedia  pretends the man was a rival for the crown, but the truth is he was a completely innocent man who was killed for keeping his word.

This British King was so important he was seen as the fulfilment of a lengthy prophecy made by Merlin, which even described where his life would end.

England and Wales remained united after his death, but Scotland continued to cause problems for the union.
