Wikipedia claims the Bulgarians are a Turkic people but this is not true, Bulgaria was home to some of the first civilisations in Europe.
The Byzantines tried to encourage the Bulgarians to join the Roman empire by stripping them of their past. This was compounded by the Ottomans destroying many of their historical records.
Bulgaria was finally liberated from the Moslems by the Russians, but just over sixty years later was then occupied by the Soviets.
