Sven Longshanks and Max Musson discuss the life of Florence Nightingale, the patron of modern nursing.
Before Florence Nightingale nursing was not a profession and it was often carried out by the lowest members in society.
After seeing the numbers dying from avoidable diseases during the Crimean war, she set in place guidelines for sanitation, hygiene and clean air which massively reduced the death rate.
She then wrote the definitive guide to nursing and started the profession with the first nursing school.
Her improvements to living standards were exported to America and India and increased the average life expectancy by decades.
