Sven Longshanks and Max Musson discuss Gordon’s war against the Islamic State of the Mahdi in Sudan.
Gordon was tricked by the press into expressing the opposite view to Prime Minister Gladstone on the Islamic uprising but due to Gordon’s massive public support, Gladstone was forced to acquiesce.
He meant to send Gordon out there in a supportive role, but Gordon was told he had an executive position and once there he decided to fight.
The stage was set for a showdown between Crusaders and Jihadis and this is how it was portrayed in the media, who had a direct link to Gordon during the siege of Khartoum.
*Correction - The Pall Mall Gazette later became the Evening Standard, not the Guardian.
Presented by Sven Longshanks and Max Musson
