Sven Longshanks looks at the Yorkshire Cricket Club scandal over abbreviating the word ‘Pakistani’.
Because the abbreviated word was used ten years ago by people in the cricket club, the coach, chairman, a cricket pundit and probably others have all had to resign.
There has even been a parliamentary committee convened and a whistle blower phone line set up.
Yet most people are unaware the word is now deemed offensive and in Pakistan itself a number of organisations use it, such as:
So how can it be deemed offensive when used in a friendly way as banter among team mates? Nobody thinks it offensive to call the British, Brits’, or Australians ‘Aussies’.
