Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson asks did the USSR really lose in Afghanistan?
What westerners believe about the world is almost entirely mythical. With the humiliation of American forces in Afghanistan this year, today's broadcast deals with the Soviet intervention in that country from late 1979 to 1989.
The Soviets did not lose militarily in Afghanistan and the war there did not affect Soviet internal politics at all. Causalities were low and the fighting was not high-intensity. The battles fought were entirely victories for the Soviet army.
The “defeat” was the creation of western, Chinese and Islamic press outlets and today is believed without much criticism. This broadcast delineates the factors that led to the Soviet withdrawal and the eventual defeat of the Afghan Communist government in the early 1990s.
