Greatest Britons: Lord Leverhulme II – GB 040422

Sven Longshanks and Max Musson look at Leverhulme’s adventures in Africa and Scotland.

After defeating the newspapers and winning the trial, Leverhulme applied his philanthropic capitalist model to the Congo.

Despite replicating everything that he had done with Port Sunlight, the Congolese could not see the value in working this way and thinking about the future.

He was to suffer another knockback in Scotland, where the crofters wanted to continue crofting, rather than industrialise and diversify into the fishing industry alongside.

There are now hardly any crofters left at all, whereas if they had followed Leverhulmes plan they could have kept their homes and would still be there.
