If the Soviet regime ended exploitation and alienation – creating the worker's paradise – what was the status of anti-Soviet dissidents? Marx and Lenin held that consciousness was determined by the material relations of production in any given society. As the psyche was mangled by capitalist exploitation, so socialism would be the sole therapeutic cure. Opposing this cure was, in the Soviet system, a clear sign of mental illness.
Using the mental institution rather than the prison became a hallmark of Soviet law enforcement, becoming systematized in the 1960s and 1970s. Understanding the specific legal and ideological justifications for this in the USSR is essential for understanding the use of psychology to control dissidents against the American empire today. While occurring only on a case by case basis as of 2022, very soon, this will become a bureaucratic, regularized system where all non-Leftist dissent will be treated as some kind of “anti-social personality disorder.”
