Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson talks about Ivan Ilyin, one of the greatest political minds of the 20th century in Russia.

A firm anti-communist and Orthodox nationalist, he developed a full system of principles for the resurrection of the Russian nation once the Soviets finally failed.

The essays analysed here came immediately after the death of Stalin, where every social institution was forced to sing his praises, from the few clergy to the most lowly civil servant in almost liturgical terms.

This public humiliation of Russia is what brought him to ask what “politics” actually means.
