Dr Matthew Raphael Johnsons talks some more about Soviet dissident Ivan Ilyin’s political theories.

What is a totalitarian regime? Is it even political? What distinguishes totalitarianism from mere authoritarianism?

These questions only came to prominence in the 20th century, the only time where both the human and material resources existed to create such a system.

Totalitarianism requires broken people; an insecure and fearful mass of human beings that has become highly suggestible.

Writing at the height of Soviet power, Ilyin answers these questions, and how liberal democracy creates such regimes.
