Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson talks about the anti-bourgeoisie ideas of Konstantin Leontiev (1831-1891)
The 19th century was one of extremes. The development of Russia (as well as Austria and Turkey) as an anti-liberal force grew rapidly, while the levelling ideologies of liberalism and socialism grew just as quickly.
Leontiev, a former diplomat at the court of the Ottoman Sultan, thought Russia was in an excellent position to challenge the greatest of evils: the bourgeoisie.
He saw in the west the destruction of hierarchy, taste and self-discipline in the vulgar and filthy cities. That the west had lost its medieval vitality and was seeking money and “peace” as sole goods as it raped its colonies for cheap resources and labor under the banner of Darwin. Russia's role role in this was to make war on imperial liberalism and the middle classes with all the resources at its disposal.
Thankfully, Leontiev never saw the result of Europe's liberalism: World War and revolution.
