Sven Longshanks looks at racial disparity between maternal deaths and new guidance eliminating gendered language in the NHS.
Black mothers are almost four times as likely to die during or after pregnancy than White mothers.
Racism is being blamed for this, which could mean resources are directed at the wrong target if the real reason is biological differences.
The NHS are also changing the word ‘alcoholic’ to ‘those who misuse alcohol’ alongside other words like ‘drug user’ and ‘homeless’.
This is because people should not be defined by a negative, but far more concerning is the abolishing of gendered language, which will lead to generalisations in a field where accuracy is paramount.
