Sven Longshanks and Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson look at the political implications of the ebb and flow of opium cultivation in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan was producing 4,600 tons a year before the Taliban reduced it to just 185 tons in 2000.
Under the US occupation, Afghanistan massively increased production, with many in the puppet government connected or related to the drug lords.
Now the Taliban are in power again, they banned the poppy again last year and the effect of that is just about to hit the world’s markets.
