As we are in the middle of Lent, this week’s lecture from Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson is on the great ascetic and monastic writer, St. Ignatius Bryanchaninov (1807-1867).
From a wealthy family in northern Russia, Ignatius rejected this wealth in favor of the monastic life.
In the crisis of the revolutions of 19848 and the later Crimean War, Russia was surrounded by enemies espousing a nihilistic materialism.
Then and now, Russia was not fighting a single power, not all of Europe, but the entire ideology of secularism and modernism.
St. Ignatius explores the ascetic implications of the world and its contradictions.
