On July 26, 2023, the Presidential Guard in Niamey, the capital of the West African state of Niger, overthrew the government headed by a key US ally, Mohamed Bazoum. The president is a key player in the military operations of the American Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the French Armed Forces, ostensibly against the Islamic militants the west created. The coup (one of many in the region) have the west in a panic state for several very good reasons, chief among them is that they all seek to reorient their policies towards Moscow and away from the west.
