Grandpa Dan discusses two stories that are not necessarily unrelated. In the first, Israel is fast tracking a new law that allows the police to shoot its own citizens who are protesting. This is quite reminiscent of laws such as the Patriot Act which were passed in the U.S. after 911. Just as people assumed at the time that these laws would only be used against the Moslems, the Israeli government is implying that this will only be used against Arabs. This sort of action makes several things clear: Citizenship in democracies doesn’t mean much and governments who view their own citizens as threats are illegitimate. Meanwhile in the U.S., the government is wrapping up its persecution of Twitter meme maker Douglass Mackey. Of course the entire process has been a farce, with the government failing to produce a single witness to back up its claims. Nevertheless, Mackey is being sent to prison for being a “threat to our democracy”.
