Sven Longshanks and Max Musson host a presentation on the great British King who won clemency from the Romans.
Caractacus managed to evade Rome for many years, fighting a guerilla war against the imperial army, however he was eventually betrayed by the British queen Cartismandua.
He was sentenced to death, but after making a speech where he appealed to Emperor Claudius’ sense of fairness and pride, he was allowed to stay at Rome in his palace as a hostage.
This palace went on to become the first British church in Rome and he went down in history as the first to receive mercy from the Roman Empire on account of his valour.
