Sven Longshanks and Max Musson look at the incredible life of General Gordon, beginning with his adventures in China.
‘Chinese Gordon’ was probably the greatest character to emerge from the British Empire. He refused to carry a weapon yet made his way to to the top of both the Chinese and Ottoman administrations.
He was disgusted by both though, in the way they treated their own people and even refused to accept a reward from the Chinese Emperor because of this.
Gordon gave 90% of his money away to charity and when he was in England he insisted on helping out at the local school for poor boys.
When he was made Governor of the Sudan he did all he could to end the slave trade, but every time he freed them the corrupt Ottomans would enslave them again.
