The author gives his reasons for writing the letters and talks about the recently ended civil war.

He explains his connection to the institution of slavery and how he grew up around slaves.

He then describes the old plantation and what his childhood was like, the occupations and sports he was involved in which involved the slaves, such as hunting and fishing and killing an alligator.
