Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson takes an in-depth look at what led to the Old Believers being anathematized.
In 1666, Russia was traumatized by the anathematizing of its ancient rite and Orthodox customs. In its place was put a Greco-Ukrainian liturgy designed to facilitate the integration of the Greek areas of the Black Sea with Ukraine and then, into Russia.
Those who revolted from this new liturgy were called Old Believers and were anathematized by those who imposed the new. As the years of persecution wore on, the Old Believers split into those who accepted a priesthood (popovtsy) versus those that did not.
The latter, rejecting the possibility of clergy and the full reign of Antichrist over the world, became the “Priestless,” or bespopovtsy. Their radical denunciation of the world is the subject of this discussion.
While the arguments of the bespopovtsy are not accepted in full by Dr. Johnson, their justification for rejecting any sacraments is worth understanding.
