The Orthodox Nationalist: The Philosophy of Hyhorii Skovoroda - TON 060723

Dr Mathew Raphael Johnson introduces the audience to Hyhorii Skovoroda.

Hyhorii (Gregory) Skovoroda (1722-1794) was a Ukrainian Cossack philosopher almost entirely unknown in the western world. His system is not only profound, but it is aimed at the practical end of happiness, but one that can only exist when Truth is apprehended. He lived at a dark time in Russo-Ukrainian history that saw the hollowing out of the church under the Petrine Yoke. As a wanderer, Skovoroda was attempting to fill the void left in Ukraine by Cossack defeat and humiliation. Trained at the Kiev Theological Academy, he built his system as a means to understand Truth and, importantly, his doctrine of the Heart. He was one of the most significant thinkers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Baroque and the resurrection of the Orthodox life in the 19th century.
