In this broadcast, Dr. Johnson takes aim at the theology of “Orthodox Stalinism,” in this case, concerning the “Great Patriotic War.” In 1943, Stalin decided to create his own, personal church. Summoning three terrified Metropolitans, he had them elect a “Patriarch,” namely Sergius. From then on, the Russian Orthodox “Patriarchate of Moscow” served as the apologist for the Soviet system at home and abroad. While these elements have long since died off, factions remain, however, that believe Stalin was a great religious figure. This view is occasionally buttressed with a series of miracle claims and today, it is enshrined in the “Main Temple for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.”
