Today, Matthew Raphael Johnson again deals with St. Ignatius (or Ignatii), one of the great theological minds of the late Russian empire. In part I, his political theology and royalism were treated in detail, but today's focus is on his practical theology, especially his views on monastic asceticism. The Arena (1867) is his best known work, written for beginners on the path to sanctification. It is not merely for monastics, but was written for anyone seeking to defeat the traps and snares of the World, a task that has been assigned to all Orthodox people. Asceticism is the moral theology of Orthodoxy, and our salvation depends on it.
