This week's Orthodox Nationalist, presented by Matthew Raphael Johnson, continues the description of the difficult philosophy of Martin Heidegger as a critique of Modernity. Things such as Freedom are not states of affairs, nor objects one can possess. They are not idols, since idols are both alien and demand human sacrifice. Freedom, personhood and community are not inherently distinct, and can never exist in the abstract. They are revealed, or disclosed, through struggle. Asceticism is not so much the denial of life as the concentration of our internal strength in resistance. Passively serving the Regime is easy, but it is not free, it oppresses personality and reveals only the ego. Such a life requires bad faith and self-deception. Freedom and personhood requires constant effort, pain and vexation, and few ever reach it.
