This week, Matthew Raphael Johnson details an increasingly popular school of philosophy, a school accepted by both slaves and emperors alike in the ancient world: Stoicism. Stoicism was mostly a Greek movement (though best known among the Romans) stressing “impassibility,” that is, a life free from passions and ambiguity. The only thing that can be called good is “virtue,” or “to live according to logos.”
