On today's Orthodox Nationalist, Matthew Raphael Johnson details a very odd phenomenon confined almost entirely to the Orthodox Church, that of the yurodivy, or the “Holy Fool.” These saints eschew all human respect and esteem in order to preach symbolically to a corrupt society. They confronted Tsars and bishops, sometimes with the most abusive and vulgar language. These saints pretended to be insane in order to mock the pretensions of the world. The Tsars in the Moscow era venerated the Fools, but none more intensely than Ivan the Terrible. While holy in secret, they were entirely unhinged in public, going so far as to openly sin to avoid any praise.
