It's difficult to defend the reputation of a man who has “Impaler” as part of his name. Yet, this was not given to him until decades after his death. Beyond the propaganda, Vlad III was a strong, principled man placed in an impossible situation. His enemies were everywhere, internal and external, and even among his allies. Vlad was brutal, of course, as would anyone be in a similar situation.
