It was 50 years ago that the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon was taken by the toasts of the faculty lounge, the North Vietnamese Army. While the western ruling classes cheered, their victory led to a mass slaughter that rivaled that of Pol Pot, often using the same methods. While both the NVA and Viet Cong were vicious towards their perceived enemies and killed millions of civilians during the war, the fall of Saigon in 1975 changed everything, since they were assured nothing could stop them and the Americans would never reengage. They acted accordingly.
