The Athonite monks in 1941 asked Hitler to take them under his personal protection, both as a unit and by individual monasteries. He accepted, and his portrait was placed among the great Emperors of Russia and Byzantium in the major monasteries. By this time, the Holy Mountain was in rough shape, suffering from the revolution, the Name Worship debacle and the policies of the Greek government and the Patriarchate. However, this cannot be separated from the entire reason Germany had taken Greece in the first place. Some benefit to Athos could be seen however, and Hitler's protection helped keep Athos in peace.
