In August of 1918, a group of Orthodox clergy were murdered near Moscow. St. Ivan was one of them.

Ivan was a leader of the Black Hundreds, head of the Monarchist Council, a missionary in the Caucasus and a political theorist, one specifically against socialism. 

He was the most “political” of all the new martyrs, although the Russian Civil War was deeply ideological
