The Orthodox Nationalist: Ivan Mazepa and Tsar Peter I - TON 032526

Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson looks at the defection of Mazepa to the Swedes and Ukraine's support for Russia in the 18th century

In late 1708, the Cossack Hetman Ivan Mazepa, a longtime friend of Peter the Great, shockingly, threw his lot in with the Swedish during the Great Northern War.

In the early 18th century, Ukraine (the Hetmanate) was on the brink of total exhaustion and near collapse. The Cossacks were rapidly dwindling in numbers, forcing Mazepa's hand.

Regardless of the evils of Peter, the Ukrainian countryside declared their support for Russia against Sweden as Mazepa's forces melted away.

This lecture explains the consequences of his infamous defection and even his addition to the ritual “Anathemas” for the Sunday of Orthodoxy
