The Orthodox Nationalist: The Political Theology of Optina - TON 042926

Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson looks at the most important Russian monastery of the 19th century and its influence on others

Russia in the later 19th century saw a religious upsurge. The corruption of the higher levels of the nobility had caused great confusion, and millions were looking for peace and stability

The fame of the monks at Optina Hermitage was such that they had an impact on writers as diverse as Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Kireyevsky

When the Reds took power, the monastery was shut down, but today, with the help of the state, it has revived. This broadcast deals with the political ideology of its abbots and elders

Presented by Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson
