This lecture deals with two of Dr. Johnson's favorite works by Alexander Solzhenitsyn: The First Circle (1968) and The Cancer Ward (1966). Much of Solzhenitsyn's anti-Soviet and anti-modernist critique can be found in these lengthy books, but one is unlikely to find such an interpretation in modern literary criticism. This is substantially revised and rewritten from Dr. Johnson's 2010 book, The Ancient Orthodox Tradition in Russian Literature
