Lev Tikhomirov (1852-1923) was originally a violent revolutionary, even being a leader on the Narodnaya Volya (People's Freedom, formerly Land and Liberty, a terrorist group), spending four years in the Peter and Paul fortress
After the assassination of the popular Alexander II, he fled abroad and began to reconsider his views. He not only repudiated the left, but became one of the most significant monarchist and Orthodox Nationalist writers of his era
This shook the left to its core. He wrote On Monarchist Statehood to be something like his magnum opus, his mature understanding of the royal state, bureaucracy and Natural Law
