Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson looks at the Slavophile movement and what gave rise to it.

Continuing the lecture from last week, this part describes the Slavophile in greater detail. Here, the historical context and antecedents of this movement are described, often coming from unexpected places. The movement came from the corruption of the Petrine Synodal system by the middle of the 19th century. The church structure was in a state of atrophy given the Petrine legacy, so the Slavophiles sought to reinvigorate it through philosophy, likely the most influential Russia ever produced.
