Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson takes a closer look at the philosophy underlying Soviet ideas about science.
Marxism and Leninism are Enlightenment ideologies that seek to replace the present, “flawed” natural order with one based on mechanics. As all is material, so all must also be mechanical – there is nothing more to life.
This means that, over time, the world can be replaced by factory created entities that will replace the “inefficient,” organic human body. This is the long term mission of socialism.
This lecture connects the scientific ideology of JD Bernal and JBS Haldane – both Stalin-era Communist Party members from the British isles – to the development of Soviet science, especially their drive to create a mechanistic “immortality” to overcome nature herself, as evidenced by Haldane's introduction to the Soviet film, Experiments to Revitalize the Organism (1940).
Bernal's infamous book The World, the Flesh and the Devil laid out in 1929 what the Soviet system would try to bring about: the entire world as a single factory that will remake the universe in its own image.
