On January 27th, 2024, Russia celebrated the 80th anniversary of the lifting of the siege of Leningrad. On May 1st, 1945, by order of Stalin, Leningrad, along with Stalingrad, Sevastopol and Odessa, was named a “City of Heroes.” Yet, about five years later, also by the will of Stalin, almost the entire leadership of the “hero city” was suddenly arrested and removed from their posts. Many were even executed. Today, the “Leningrad Affair” (Ленинградское дело) or the “Leningrad Purge” (Ленинградская чистка) remains one of the most mysterious and little-studied events of Stalin's rule over the USSR.
