Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson provides some more background information on "Saint" Oscar Romero and the civil war in El Salvador for this week’s episode, after discussing it on last week’s Daily Nationalist.
From 1979 to 1992, the tiny country of El Salvador was convulsed by civil war. The government, both military and civilian, was faced with a large, well trained and very well armed guerilla force that became known as the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN). It was one of the biggest political issues in US politics in the 80s, since the Reagan administration was assisting the government fight the rebels.
What made wars in Latin American unique at the time was the fact that the Jesuit order and many upper clergy supported the Marxists. Armed with pseudo-intellectual "liberation theology," Marx was deemed perfectly consistent with Catholicism. The Jesuits at two elite universities engaged in anti-government agitprop and ran guns for the Leninists. For this reason, the Archbishop of San Salvador, Oscar Romero, was gunned down by the army's rapid response team. Two weeks ago, the Roman church canonized him as a "martyr for the faith." Today, Marxism has been accepted as part of the
official ideology of the Catholics under "Pope Francis."
This broadcast, finally, explains in detail the conditions under which this civil war was fought. It is almost bizarre how impossible it is to find anything defending the anti-communist position there. Nothing in English on this issue is reliable. Almost nothing exists explaining or defending the government's position. The Vatican relied on a well financed PR campaign from the rebels, Cuba and the USSR to form their opinions on Romero. A man who would have turned El Salvador into a Soviet GULag has been transformed into a "martyr for the faith."
