Greatest Britons: HRH Cassivellaunus – GB 1018207

Sven Longshanks and Max Musson discuss the heroic King who gave the Romans such a thrashing they didn’t dare come back for 100 years.

Cassivellaunus is known as Caswallon in the British histories and he defeated the Romans twice.

In the first instance they never got further than a few miles inland after being fought in the water while disembarking from their ships.

A year later Caesar tried again, this time with a battle elephant and support from all the Gaulish chieftains on pain of death .

Caesar was amazed by the technical skill of the British chariot drivers and remarked upon the many universities in Britain where the aristocracy of Gaul were educated.

Once again the elements were on the side of the Britons with the Channel gales destroying his ships and with winter setting in, he was forced to retreat back to Gaul leaving not one Roman soldier on the island.

The tale is full of intrigue and political backstabbing by British traitors and many parallels can be drawn with today and the importance of Britain to the EU.
