Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson continues the series of presentations on Metropolitan Saint Filaret with a look at his ideas on 'the Jewish Question'
At the end of the 18th century, the expansion of the Russian empire to the west led to a massive influx of Jews into Russia. This was a shock to the Russian moral system, since for so long, Russians were essentially insulated from the Jews as a political force.
Orthodox writers such as the great Mikhail Nazarov today explain the essence of the “Jewish question” to be the radical incompatibility of Jews with other peoples, and this was made clear two hundred years ago.
This insurmountable incompatibility exists anywhere Jews live among non-Jewish peoples, while, at the same time, retaining an immense financial, economic and ideological power.
In the middle of the 19th century, the great theologian and Russian nationalist Metropolitan St. Filaret (Drozdov) was one of the leading voices on the “Jewish Question,” and his opinion retains great weight with the church today.
