The Daily Nationalist: The Benin Bronzes – DN 050223

Sven Longshanks looks at the history of the Benin bronzes and problems with returning historical artefacts in general.

There are calls to return the bronzes to Nigeria, but they were created for Nigerian slave traders with the wealth they made from the slave trade.

They were also taken as lawful booty when Britain went to Nigeria to free the slaves who were still being used for human sacrifices there.

To return them to their original owner would be to return wealth gained exclusively through the selling of slaves.

Once returned, they also disappear from the museum and end up being sold on the black market.
