When the statue was erected, an estimated ten thousand Virginians used rope and wagons to pull the pieces a mile to the plinth where it was to stand, as a measure of the high regard which they had for him.
This week Governor Ralph Northam had a rope tied around his neck and sawed him in half, saying that it represented '400 years of history that we should not be proud of'.
