Sven Longshanks and Dr Matthew Raphael Johnson take a closer look at relations between the two countries of Turkey and Russia.
Despite the Russian presence in Syria helping to defend the Assad administration and Turkey’s argument with the Kurds, Turkey and Russia remain on good terms.
This is even more surprising when you consider Russia’s backing of Armenia and Turkey’s support for Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Turkey is the mediator for prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine and this based upon Turkey’s economic ties with Russia, but also on the mutual respect Putin and Erdogan have for each other.
