Alfred’s fleet of nine ships blocked the Vikings escape route and lashed the enemy’s ships to their own, boarding them and then fighting them on the sands when the tide went out.

Asser stresses Alfred’s love of religion and how it encouraged him to be the best king he could be, so good that other nations voluntarily submitted themselves to him.

He reformed the law codes and wrote them down, so the judges had them to refer to.
